Day Skipper Theory

The RYA Day Skipper shore-based theory course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

The course is suitable for both beginners and candidates with limited knowledge and experience. The course covers power and sail and is therefore suitable for divers, fishermen, power boaters and yachtsmen.

The subjects covered during the Day Skipper theory course will include charts, navigation instruments, buoyage, tides and depths of water, electronic chart plotters, weather at sea, safety, pilotage, passage planning and the Collision Regulations.

At Simply Yachts we run the RYA Day Skipper theory course over five consecutive days or over two and a half weekends. Course numbers are small and often we will have two instructors to the group. Courses typically start at 09.00hrs and finish at 17.30hrs. There will be homework and students will sit two assessment papers during the course. Teas and coffee are provided during the day but you will need to bring a packed lunch.
