RYA Coastal / Yachtmaster Theory
This shore-based theory course is aimed at the more experienced sailor or motor cruiser building upon the knowledge gained in the Day Skipper theory course. Many of the topics are similar, but explore subjects in greater depth. This course is essential knowledge for anyone considering taking the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore certificates of competence.
This is an intensive course covering advanced navigation techniques including position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge including secondary port calculations, navigation in restricted visibility, Admiralty publications and electronic position finding equipment. The meteorology tuition includes the taking and interpretation of forecasts, plotting of weather systems and weather prediction. Students are shown how to use this information when planning and executing passage plans. The International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea are dealt with in detail and you will also learn more about boat stability and safety offshore.
It is strongly recommended that students have a good grasp of theory subjects to Dayskipper standard and have thoroughly revised the Collision Regulations before attending.
At Simply Yachts we run the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory course over five consecutive days or over two and a half weekends. Course numbers are small and often we will have two instructors to the group. Courses typically start at 09.00hrs and finish at 17.30hrs. There will be homework and students will sit three assessment papers during the course. Teas and coffee are provided during the day but you will need to bring a packed lunch.
